A PIPELINE OF MARINE BIOPROSPECTING SERVICES TO DISCOVER NEW NATURAL PRODUCTS
Advanced research services to discover new marine products
EUREMAP is optimising a marine bioprospecting pipeline in Europe to enable state-of-the-art research and capacity for both academia and industry. This service pipeline is a key tool to support the discovery of new bioactive natural products from marine organisms by utilising novel technology.
Through European Research Infrastructures (RIs) and their local partner sites offer marine bioprospecting services, there is currently no single RI that offers users a comprehensive set of services in this area. EUREMAP is the first attempt to build a sustainable, comprehensive and integrated cross-RI pipeline, bringing together the complementary expertise of each RI – from chemical biology and drug biology to data science – to create synergies.
Service Pipeline
To optimise and streamline the marine bioprospecting process, EUREMAP has developed a Service Pipeline, which maps out the key services offered at different stages of the discovery workflow. This matrix provides a clear and detailed overview of the critical steps, from genomics and biomass production to bioassays, chemical profiling and data integration.
Project outputs
EUREMAP is building an integrated, multidisciplinary marine bioprospecting workflow that connects the expertise of its consortium partners — EU-OPENSCREEN, EMBL, EMBRC, and ELIXIR — to accelerate the discovery of novel bioactive natural products from marine organisms. Below is an overview of the project’s key outputs to date.
Demonstrator projects EUREMAP’s demonstrator projects showcase the marine bioprospecting workflow in action, translating consortium capabilities into real-world discovery pipelines:
- Enhancing the Production and Therapeutic Potential of Streptocyclinones for Alzheimer’s Disease — investigating novel streptocyclinones from marine Streptomyces sp. CA-237351, compounds with anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties, to explore new therapeutic avenues for neurodegenerative disease.
- Metabolomic Profiling of the Sea Surface Microlayer and Bio-fouling Organisms, with a Focus on Siderophores — exploring an underexplored marine niche for novel siderophores, metabolites with promising applications in medicine, agriculture, and bioremediation.
